President Lindbergh has a speech that says with the Germans conquering more and more Soviet territory, and he recognizes the German action by saying how if the Germans defeat the Soviet Union, the communist threat and "evil regime" will no longer be a threat to democracy. Lindbergh also then introduces a program called Just Folks that allows Youth from the city to go to the traditional way of heartland life" or in other words, trying to send youth from the city to country life. Sandy supports the idea while Herman rejects it because he claims it seperates the Jewish youth from their Jewish families. Sandy is eventually participates in Just Folks and goes to Kentucky to do farm work for 8 weeks. Alvin meanwhile fights for the Canadian Army against Hitler and loses the lower part of his leg. He is sent from Europe back to Canada is stays at a hospital. The arguments still continued about the war though were by Herman. The war was slowly dividing the Roth family apart and Phillip tries to escape this. He goes with Earl Axman and they steal items.
